Claude Code Could not resolve authentication method: What It Means and How to Fix It

Could not resolve authentication method means Claude Code found no credential. Upgrade to 2.1.176+ and set the key where the worker starts. Checked on 2.1.318.

Also available in中文Español

Could not resolve authentication method means a Claude Code session reached the API client without any credential: no API key, no auth token, no login. You see it on screen in background sessions and cloud sessions. Upgrade to Claude Code 2.1.176 or later, then make sure ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN or your cloud provider credentials are set in the environment that starts the worker. In a normal terminal session the same problem shows up as Not logged in · Please run /login. We checked this on Claude Code 2.1.318 on November 5, 2026, following the official error reference.

The full message:

Could not resolve authentication method. Expected one of apiKey, authToken, credentials, config, or profile to be set. Or for one of the "X-Api-Key" or "Authorization" headers to be explicitly omitted

What could not resolve authentication method means

The text comes from the Anthropic API client inside Claude Code. It lists the credential types the client accepts (apiKey, authToken, credentials, config, profile) and says none of them was set. Where you see it depends on how Claude Code runs:

  • Background sessions and cloud sessions show the message when the worker process starts without a credential.
  • Interactive sessions, claude -p and the Agent SDK report the same condition as Not logged in · Please run /login and write this string only to the debug log. If you found it there, follow the Not logged in steps.

Our test on Claude Code 2.1.318

We ran an isolated Claude Code 2.1.318 with an empty home directory, no environment credentials and a local mock API:

$ claude -p "say ok" --debug-file debug.log     # no credential configured
Not logged in · Please run /login

$ grep "Could not resolve" debug.log
[ERROR] API error (attempt 1/11): Could not resolve authentication method. Expected one of apiKey, authToken, credentials, config, or profile to be set. Or for one of the "X-Api-Key" or "Authorization" headers to be explicitly omitted
[ERROR] Error in API request: Could not resolve authentication method. ...

The terminal only said Not logged in; the debug log held the full Could not resolve authentication method line. Our mock API received no request at all, so the failure happens inside Claude Code before anything goes over the network. Changing your proxy or gateway won’t help with this error.

How to fix could not resolve authentication method

  1. Upgrade. Before v2.1.174, a background session assigned to an idle pre-started worker could fail this way even with valid credentials. Before v2.1.176, a cloud session that sat idle before being claimed could too. Check your version and update:
  2. Put the credential where the worker can read it. A key exported only in your interactive shell profile may be missing from the process that launches background or cloud workers. Check what the environment actually contains:
  3. Pick one credential type. For API billing use ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. For a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise subscription in automation, generate a long-lived token and set CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN:
  4. Confirm with /status. Start an interactive claude session in the same environment and run /status. It shows which credential source resolves.
  5. For the Agent SDK, follow the quickstart authentication setup; the SDK reads the same environment variables.
claude --version
claude update
env | grep -E 'ANTHROPIC|CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH' # macOS / Linux
Get-ChildItem Env:ANTHROPIC*, Env:CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH* # PowerShell
claude setup-token
export CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN="paste-the-token-here"

Settings files are another common place for credentials. Our settings.json location guide shows which files Claude Code reads and in what order.

Which credentials Claude Code looks for

Claude Code checks these sources in this order of precedence and uses the first one it finds:

  1. Cloud provider credentials, when CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK, CLAUDE_CODE_USE_VERTEX or CLAUDE_CODE_USE_FOUNDRY is set
  2. ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN
  3. ANTHROPIC_API_KEY
  4. apiKeyHelper output (see apiKeyHelper script is failing when the helper breaks)
  5. CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN
  6. an Anthropic profile or federation credentials
  7. the subscription login from /login

The error means the worker found none of them.

  • If claude -p jobs exit with Not logged in right after someone signs in again to the same claude.ai account, update Claude Code. Before v2.1.318, re-signing in removed the stored login before saving the new one.
  • If you do have a login and the API rejects it, you get a 401 instead, covered in our 401 OAuth token has expired guide.
  • GitHub issue #67747 asked for this error to be documented; the docs entry quoted above is the result.

FAQ

Is could not resolve authentication method a network problem?

No credential was found, so no request was sent. In our test the mock API saw zero requests.

Does /login fix it?

In an interactive session, yes, because it stores a login Claude Code can find. For background workers, cloud sessions and CI, set an environment credential instead, since nobody is there to sign in.
