ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500: Which Tier After the Oct 29 Change?
ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500: what OpenAI actually commits to, who keeps the old Pro 200 allowance until Oct 29, how Fast and Ultrafast burn usage, and which tier to pick.

ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 used to be a simple question: do you want 5x or 20x of Plus? That’s gone. As of October 21, 2026, OpenAI’s help page lists three Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month, stops quoting multipliers for them, and has quietly lowered what a new $200 subscription includes. If you’re on Pro 200 already, there’s a date to circle: October 29. I went through OpenAI’s own pages (last checked October 21, 2026) so you don’t have to, and I’ll say plainly where OpenAI doesn’t give a number.
If you’re still deciding between Go, Plus and Pro in general, read my ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro notes first. This one is only about the three Pro tiers.
The short answer
- Pro 100: the default Pro for most heavy users. Same Pro features, less included usage than 200, no Ultrafast.
- Pro 200: still more usage than 100, but new subscribers get a lower allowance than before, at the same $200.
- Pro 500: the only tier with Ultrafast mode, and the highest included usage. You’ll know if you need it.
- Grandfathered Pro 200 users: your old allowance runs through October 29. After that you’re on the new, lower one.
ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500: what OpenAI actually says
Everything in this table comes from OpenAI’s Pro help article, the pricing page and the Codex pricing page. Where it says “more” or “highest”, that’s because OpenAI didn’t publish a number.

| Pro 100 | Pro 200 | Pro 500 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $100 / month | $200 / month | $500 / month |
| Included usage | less than 200 | more than 100 | highest |
| Ultrafast mode | no | no | yes |
| Annual billing | no | no | no |
| Codex 5-hour limit | none right now | none right now | none right now |
A few things jump out. There is no annual plan for any of the three; they’re monthly only. Ultrafast is a Pro 500 thing, full stop. And the Codex pricing page says “Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit”, though weekly limits may still apply. “Currently” is doing some work in that sentence, so I wouldn’t build a workflow on it.
What about the old 5x and 20x? The English help page doesn’t use them anymore. The Simplified Chinese version of the same article still showed the old 5x/20x wording when I checked, which tells me the translation is lagging, not that the multipliers are back. Trust the English page.
The Pro 200 change after October 29
This is the part people are actually searching for. OpenAI’s help article says new Pro 200 subscriptions now get a lower included allowance than before, for the same $200. It doesn’t say how much lower. I looked. There is no number.

Who keeps the old allowance, and for how long:
- You had an active Pro 200 subscription at any point between September 22 and 10 a.m. Pacific on September 29, 2026.
- If so, you keep the previous allowance through October 29.
- Cancelling and resubscribing on the same account still counts, per OpenAI.
- Keeping the old allowance doesn’t give you Ultrafast. That stays on Pro 500.
OpenAI says only affected users get an email about it. After October 29, grandfathered users drop to the same allowance as everyone else on Pro 200. October 29, 2026 at what hour, OpenAI doesn’t specify, so don’t plan a big job for that evening.
Fast and Ultrafast burn your allowance faster
This is the bit that makes the ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 math tricky. Speed modes don’t cost extra money directly. They cost extra usage.

- Fast uses 2.5x of your included usage compared with Standard on the same model. On purchased credits, OpenAI’s credit rates put it at 2x.
- Ultrafast (Pro 500 only, on GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol) uses 8x of included usage, or 6x on credits.
So a Pro 200 user who leaves Fast on all day is effectively getting less than half the Standard work out of the allowance. If you keep hitting the wall on Pro 100, try turning Fast off before you pay double. Honestly, that’s the cheapest upgrade there is.
Credits or upgrading: which is cheaper?
All Pro tiers can buy credits on top. OpenAI says credits cover Codex, ChatGPT Work, and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint integrations. Two catches:
- Credits on Pro 100 or 200 don’t unlock Ultrafast.
- OpenAI doesn’t publish a fixed “X credits = Y messages” conversion for Pro, so I can’t tell you the exact break-even point.
In the ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 decision, credits are the middle option. My rule of thumb: if you run out a couple of times a month, buy credits. If you run out every week, the next tier is probably simpler. That’s an opinion, not an OpenAI number.
Which tier should you pick?
Here’s how I’d decide ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500, without pretending to know numbers OpenAI hasn’t published:
- Pick Pro 100 if you want Pro features (the bigger context windows listed on the pricing page, Codex without a five-hour cap right now) and you’re not sure you need more. Start here. You can upgrade instantly.
- Pick Pro 200 if you’ve actually hit Pro 100’s limits in normal work, not in one crazy weekend. And remember the new 200 is smaller than the old 200.
- Pick Pro 500 only if you need Ultrafast, or if a team-sized workload sits on one personal account. Most solo people don’t.
If Codex is the main reason you’re paying, my Claude Code vs Codex comparison may save you money. And the usage limit tracker is where I log changes like this one as they happen.
Switching between Pro tiers
You change plans in Settings → My Plan on the web. OpenAI’s help article says support can’t reset your usage limits, so don’t bother asking. The English help article doesn’t spell out how proration works when you switch, so check the plan-change screen before you confirm. Either way, a ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 experiment is month-to-month, since there’s no annual lock-in. There’s no annual billing to lock in either.
If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, you change or cancel through that store, and Apple handles App Store refunds. The ChatGPT prices on Apple’s US listing match the web for all three Pro tiers ($100, $200, $500), so there’s no reason to move just for price. For cancelling or downgrading in general, see my guide to cancelling or downgrading.
My take
For most people, ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 isn’t a close call anymore: start on 100. The $200 tier got smaller for new subscribers, OpenAI won’t say by how much, and the one thing that clearly separates the tiers (Ultrafast) lives only on $500. If you’re grandfathered on Pro 200, use the old allowance until October 29, then watch your first week on the new allowance before deciding whether to drop to 100.
Checked on October 21, 2026 (Beijing time). OpenAI edits these pages often, so look at the help article yourself before you pay.
ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 FAQ
What’s the difference between ChatGPT Pro 100 and 200?
Both are monthly Pro plans with the same features. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100. Neither has Ultrafast. OpenAI doesn’t publish exact usage numbers for either.
Is ChatGPT Pro 200 still worth it after October 29?
For people who regularly max out Pro 100, maybe. But new Pro 200 subscriptions already get a lower allowance than before, and OpenAI hasn’t said how much lower. Try Pro 100 first.
Does ChatGPT Pro have a 5-hour limit in Codex?
OpenAI’s Codex pricing page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Weekly limits may still apply.
Can I pay for ChatGPT Pro annually?
No. Pro 100, 200 and 500 are monthly only, according to OpenAI’s help article.
Do I keep the old Pro 200 allowance if I cancel and resubscribe?
Yes, if you had an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and September 29, 2026 (10 a.m. PT) on the same account. The old allowance ends on October 29 either way.
