Which AI Subscription Is Worth It in 2026? My Honest Picks by Use Case
Which AI subscription is worth paying for in 2026: a use-case decision guide for ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI and DeepSeek, with official prices checked on Oct 21, 2026.

Which AI subscription is worth it in 2026? People ask me this as if there’s one winner. There isn’t. There’s the plan that fits what you do all day, and then there are four or five plans you’d be paying for out of guilt. So I went through the official pricing pages of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google on October 21, 2026, and sorted the answer by use case instead of by brand.
Rule for this post: every price comes from the vendor’s own page, linked where I use it. When a vendor doesn’t publish a number, I say so instead of guessing.
Which AI subscription is worth it? The short answer
- You mostly chat, write and translate: stay on a free plan, or try ChatGPT Go at $8. Don’t pay $20 yet.
- You’re a US college student: claim OpenAI’s free ChatGPT Plus offer before October 31. Four months for $0.
- You code in a terminal or an editor: Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus, both $20. Pick by tool, not by hype.
- Your life is Gmail, Docs and Drive: Google AI Pro at $19.99. The 5 TB of storage alone changes the maths.
- You hit limits every day and it pays your bills: Claude Max 5x or ChatGPT Pro 100, both $100. Not the $200 tiers on day one.
What each plan costs (official US prices)
Here’s the whole field on one chart. Monthly billing, US list prices, before tax.

Three clusters jump out. Under $10 you have Google AI Plus at $4.99 and ChatGPT Go at $8. Around $20 sit ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro, which is basically the same price three times. Then the jump to $100 and $200: Claude Max 5x and 20x, Google AI Ultra, and the three ChatGPT Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500.
If you want the long table with API prices and Spain/Mexico notes, that lives on my AI subscription and API price comparison page. This post is about which AI subscription to actually pick.
If you mostly chat, write emails and translate
Honestly? Free first. ChatGPT Free gives “unlimited text chats” within abuse guardrails, according to OpenAI’s pricing page. Claude Free and Gemini’s free tier are there too. The DeepSeek app is free, and its download page says so plainly.
If you keep hitting upload or image caps, Go at $8 is the cheap step up. One catch I don’t love: OpenAI says Go “may include ads”. Plus, Pro and the others don’t carry that line. Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the other cheap seat, with 2x the free usage limits and 400 GB of storage.
What you don’t get on these cheap plans is the reasoning-heavy stuff. Go has no GPT-6 Sol or Astra. That’s fine for emails. It’s not fine for a spreadsheet you actually need to understand.
Students: grab the free Plus months before October 31
This one is time-sensitive. OpenAI’s Back to School offer gives eligible students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus. Not Pro. Plus.
The fine print matters. It’s for current full- or part-time college and grad students at eligible US degree-granting schools, verified through SheerID. You claim it by October 31, 2026, once. You need a valid payment method, it renews at $20 a month after the free months, and it doesn’t work while your subscription is billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Claude, for comparison, says it doesn’t offer standing discounts on Pro or Max. For students, the official route is a university-sponsored Claude for Education account, if your school has one.
Coding: Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus?
For code, the $20 plans are where it gets interesting, because both include a real coding agent. Claude Pro includes Claude Code (the Free plan doesn’t). ChatGPT Plus includes Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS.
On limits, neither side hands you a clean message count. Anthropic says there’s “no fixed message count”: a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits, and your chats and Claude Code draw from the same pool. OpenAI’s Codex pricing page at least gives a range for Plus: about 15 to 160 local messages per five hours on GPT-6.1 Sol. That range is huge, and OpenAI calls it an estimate. Fair enough. Annoying, but fair.
My take: pick the agent you like using, then see whether you hit the wall. I compared the two tools in detail in Claude Code vs Codex, so I won’t repeat it here.
One myth to kill while we’re here. “Claude Code got more expensive” is going around. It didn’t. The Pro and Max prices on claude.com are unchanged, and the plan to bill Agent SDK and claude -p usage separately from June 15 was paused by Anthropic. Since October 7, Max and Team actually include monthly API credits on top.
Gmail, Docs and Drive people: Google AI Pro
If you already pay Google for storage, Google AI Pro at $19.99 is the easiest yes on this list. You get 4x the free Gemini limits, a 1 million token context window, 1,000 Google Flow credits a month, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, YouTube Premium Lite where it’s offered, and 5 TB of storage.
Is it the best pure chatbot for $20? I’m not going to pretend there’s an official benchmark for that. But if you’d otherwise be paying for 2 TB of Drive anyway, the AI part is close to free. I wrote a separate breakdown of Google AI Pro vs Ultra if you’re wondering about the $99.99 and $199.99 tiers.
Heavy users: the $100 tier, not the $200 one
At $100 you have Claude Max 5x, ChatGPT Pro 100 and Google AI Ultra 5x ($99.99). All three are “you use this all day” plans.
Claude Max now includes $100 or $200 a month in API credits on the Claude Platform, per the pricing page. ChatGPT Pro has no five-hour Codex limit right now, according to the Codex doc. Google AI Ultra 5x gives 5x the AI Pro limits plus 20 TB of storage and 10,000 Flow credits.
My rule is boring and it works: start at $100, run a full month, and only move to $200 if you keep running out. Nothing at this level is prepaid for a year (Max and Pro are monthly only), so you’re never stuck. If you’re weighing the OpenAI side, I went through ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500 separately; for Anthropic, see Claude Pro vs Max.
Tight budget: which AI subscription for under $10?
Under $10 the honest list is short. DeepSeek’s app costs nothing. Google AI Plus is $4.99. ChatGPT Go is $8 and may show ads. That’s it from the big names on these pages.
If you’re also weighing coding, though, none of those three gets you a full coding agent. Claude Code needs at least Pro. Full Codex needs at least Plus. So the cheapest AI subscription for coding is really $20, whichever side you choose.
Which AI subscription by use case (cheat sheet)
Here’s the whole thing as one table. These are my picks, not the vendors’ recommendations.

And because $20 a month sounds smaller than it is, here’s the same tier over a year.

Claude Pro is the only one of the three with an official annual option ($200 up front, so $17 a month). ChatGPT Plus is monthly only. I didn’t find an annual price for Google AI Pro on the pages I checked, so I’m not listing one.
Three ways people waste money on AI plans
Paying inside the iPhone app. In the US App Store, Claude Max 5x is $124.99 against $100 on the website. Max 20x is $249.99 against $200. I wrote up the whole Claude App Store price gap and how to switch to web billing.
Stacking three $20 plans “just in case”. That’s $720 a year. If you can’t name what each one does for you, cancel two. My cancel or downgrade guide covers the billing rules for each.
Jumping to $200 because of one bad week. Both OpenAI and Anthropic let paid users buy extra usage instead of upgrading. One bad week is cheaper to cover with credits than with a bigger plan every month.
My final answer
If I had to give one sentence: which AI subscription is worth it depends on one question, which is what you’d be annoyed to lose tomorrow. If it’s chat, stay free or go cheap. If it’s a coding agent, pay $20 for the one you like. If it’s Google storage, Google AI Pro. Only go to $100 when the $20 plan keeps stopping you in the middle of work.

Which AI subscription: FAQ
Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus: which is better?
Same price, $20 a month. Claude Pro includes Claude Code and offers annual billing at $17 a month. ChatGPT Plus includes Codex, the GPT-6 reasoning models and full deep research, monthly only. Neither publishes a fixed message count. I’d pick by which coding agent or chat style you prefer.
Which AI subscription is best for coding?
At $20, Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus, because both include a full coding agent. Free and Go only get a limited Codex taste in the desktop app, and Claude Free has no Claude Code. If you code all day, look at Claude Max 5x or ChatGPT Pro 100.
What’s the cheapest AI subscription?
From the official pages I checked: Google AI Plus at $4.99, then ChatGPT Go at $8. The DeepSeek app is free. For a full coding agent, the floor is $20.
ChatGPT Plus vs Gemini Pro (Google AI Pro): which should I get?
Plus if you want Codex and OpenAI’s reasoning models. Google AI Pro if you use Gmail, Docs and Drive, since it bundles 5 TB of storage and a 1M token context window. Price difference is one cent.
Did Claude Code’s price go up?
No. Pro is still $20 monthly or $17 a month annually, Max still starts at $100. The planned separate billing for the Agent SDK and claude -p was paused, and those still draw from your subscription limits.
Is there a student discount on ChatGPT Pro?
Not that I could find. The official student offer is for ChatGPT Plus: four free months for eligible US college students, claimed by October 31, 2026.
