Google AI Pro vs Ultra: What You Actually Get and Who Should Pay (2026)

Google AI Pro vs Ultra from Google's own plan pages: what $19.99, $99.99 and $199.99 a month actually get you, how Gemini limits work, and who should pay for Ultra.

Google AI Pro vs Ultra looks like a $19.99 vs $199.99 question, but it isn’t anymore. Google now sells Ultra in two sizes, Ultra 5x at $99.99 and Ultra 20x at $199.99 a month in the US, and the gap between Pro and Ultra is mostly about how much Gemini you can burn through, plus a pile of extras you may never touch. I went through Google One’s plan page, the Gemini subscriptions page and the Gemini help center on October 21, 2026. Everything below comes from those pages, and where Google says “higher” instead of a number, I say so.

My honest summary before the details: most people should buy Pro, and the people who should buy Ultra already know they’re hitting Pro’s limits every week.

The short answer

  • Google AI Pro, $19.99/month: 4x the free plan’s Gemini limits, 1M-token context, 5 TB storage, 1,000 Flow credits. Good enough for almost everyone.
  • Google AI Ultra 5x, $99.99/month: 5x Pro’s limits, 20 TB, 10,000 Flow credits, Project Genie, bigger bundles.
  • Google AI Ultra 20x, $199.99/month: 20x Pro’s limits, 30 TB, 25,000 Flow credits.
  • Not sure? Start on Pro. You’ll find out in a week whether you hit the wall.

Google AI Pro vs Ultra: what you actually get

This table is rebuilt from the comparison on Google One’s AI plans page and gemini.google/subscriptions. US prices, monthly, before tax.

A few more lines from the Google AI Pro vs Ultra table that don’t fit neatly: Pro gets Google Home Premium Standard, Ultra gets Advanced. Both get Health Premium. For the coding tools, Google says Pro gets “expanded” access to Antigravity and Jules, while Ultra gets “higher” and “highest” limits. Those are Google’s words. There’s no number behind them on the page.

The context window is the same 1M tokens on Pro and both Ultra tiers. So if you’re thinking about Ultra for longer documents, that’s not where the difference is.

How Gemini usage limits work on Pro and Ultra

This is the part that actually decides Google AI Pro vs Ultra for most people. According to Google’s help page on Gemini limits, usage refreshes every 5 hours, up to a weekly limit. If you hit the limit as a subscriber, you don’t get cut off; Gemini falls back to Flash-Lite until the limit resets. You can also use AI credits to keep going past it.

Google doesn’t publish a fixed number of prompts per plan. It gives multipliers: Plus is 2x free, Pro 4x free, Ultra 5x or 20x Pro. So “how many messages does Ultra get?” doesn’t have an official answer. Anyone giving you one is guessing.

Price per unit of Gemini usage

Because Google only gives multipliers, I did the boring maths: take the free plan’s limit as 1 unit and divide each price by the units.

Google AI Pro vs Ultra price per unit of Gemini usage: Plus and Ultra 20x about $2.50, Pro and Ultra 5x about $5.00
  • AI Plus: $4.99 for 2 units, about $2.50 per unit.
  • AI Pro: $19.99 for 4 units, about $5.00 per unit.
  • Ultra 5x: $99.99 for 20 units, about $5.00 per unit.
  • Ultra 20x: $199.99 for 80 units, about $2.50 per unit.

That surprised me a little. Ultra 5x isn’t a volume discount at all; per unit it costs the same as Pro. Ultra 20x is the cheap-per-unit one. My maths, not Google’s, and it ignores storage and bundles. But it does tell you that if you go Ultra purely for Gemini usage, the 20x tier is the one that makes sense on paper.

What a year costs

I didn’t find an annual price for Google AI Pro or Ultra on the pages I checked, so this is just 12 times the monthly price.

Google AI Pro vs Ultra yearly cost at monthly billing: Plus $59.88, Pro $239.88, Ultra 5x $1,199.88, Ultra 20x $2,399.88

Pro comes to about $240 a year. Ultra 5x is about $1,200, Ultra 20x about $2,400. Put that way, the Google AI Pro vs Ultra choice is roughly “a nice dinner a month” versus “a used car payment”.

Who should pay for Ultra

I’d only buy Ultra in one of these cases:

  • You hit Pro’s weekly limit regularly, and Flash-Lite fallback actually hurts your work.
  • You make a lot of video or images in Flow and 1,000 credits a month runs out fast.
  • You want Project Genie, which is Ultra-only.
  • You’d already pay for YouTube Premium and lots of storage, so the bundle offsets part of the price. Be honest with yourself here.

Everyone else: in Google AI Pro vs Ultra, buy Pro. If even Pro feels like a lot, Google AI Plus is $4.99 with 2x the free limits and a 128k context window. And if you’re comparing Google against ChatGPT or Claude, my which AI subscription is worth it guide puts them side by side by use case.

Google AI Pro vs Ultra: sharing, eligibility and where it’s available

Google’s plan page says family sharing works “with up to five others”, which can make Pro or Ultra cheaper per person. One catch in the fine print: the bundled subscription savings (like YouTube Premium) can’t be shared within the family group. Plans are for personal Google accounts, and you need to be 18 or older. Google says Ultra is available in more than 150 countries; check the plans page in your own country for the local price, since I’m only quoting US numbers here.

If you subscribe on iPhone, the US App Store lists AI Pro at $19.99 and the 30 TB Ultra at $199.99, the same as the web. So no hidden markup like the one I found for Claude. More on that in my Claude App Store price notes.

My take

Google AI Pro vs Ultra isn’t close for normal use. Pro at $19.99 gets you the same 1M-token context, generous limits and 5 TB of storage. Ultra is for people who already live at the limit, or who’ll genuinely use Flow and Genie. If you go Ultra mainly for more Gemini, 20x is better value per unit than 5x.

Checked October 21, 2026 (Beijing time). Google changes plan pages without much notice, so look again before you pay. If you’re cutting subscriptions instead of adding one, see how to cancel or downgrade.

Google AI Pro vs Ultra FAQ

What’s the difference between Google AI Pro and Ultra?

Pro is $19.99 a month with 4x the free Gemini limits and 5 TB. Ultra is $99.99 (5x Pro’s limits, 20 TB) or $199.99 (20x Pro’s limits, 30 TB), plus more Flow credits, Project Genie and bigger bundles.

Only if you regularly hit Pro’s limits or need Flow credits and Project Genie. On pure usage, Ultra 5x costs the same per unit as Pro.

Does Google AI Ultra have a bigger context window than Pro?

No. Google lists 1M tokens for Pro and both Ultra tiers.

How many prompts do Pro and Ultra get?

Google doesn’t publish a number. It gives multipliers, refreshes limits every 5 hours up to a weekly cap, and falls back to Flash-Lite when you hit the limit.

Can I share Google AI Pro with family?

Yes. Google says AI plans include family sharing with up to five others, but the bundled subscription savings aren’t shareable.
